A Bigger Plan.

a-bigger-planI sat on the floor with a stack of magazines, newspapers, scissors and Scream Queens on in the background. I didn’t know what I set out to make, but I knew the minute it was finished. After admiring other artists’ mixed media pieces for what feels like a lifetime, it feels so good to release my own into the wild. I’m curious- what does this piece say to you?

Happy Wednesday, xx

Designing in Denim

When I was 11 I decided I was going to start designing and sewing my own clothes. With limited sewing skills and no patience to follow a pattern, I got busy cutting and glueing pieces together until I had made a pink and blue “tank top” that more closely resembled a children’s swimsuit and was totally unwearable. Sadly, that was the end of my designing career- until the creative team at eShakti reached out and asked if I’d like to try my hand at a little custom dress designing.

The process is super simple. You choose a base that you love (I chose this denim shift dress), and then you customize it with all of your measurements (height, arm length, hips, waist, chest, shoulders) and the style of the dress that suits you best- neckline, length of dress, sleeves or no sleeves, pockets or no pockets.

Then the team at eShakti gets to work and you sit back and wait for your creation to arrive. I’m pleased with how it came out, and even more pleased that the waist tie doubles as a choker necklace! You can use coupon code STATEANDOCCUPATION at checkout to save 10% on your totally customized design.

PS: Shakti in Sanskrit means “power.” As in you have the power to choose a design that flatters your body; as in eShakti’s staff in India are empowered to make a living for their families in safe, fair and comfortable working conditions. eShakti is transparent about the way your clothes are made, and I think that’s so important. You can find them on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest.

Fridays PrIntspo

bordermonogomyFotorCreatedIt’s -23 this this morning, but with the windchill it feels like -29, which feels like I have no idea why I’m out of bed. 😉 I was feeling particularly inspired to show you these three prints today because: if I’m going to cling to my sheets while I hit snooze every morning- it might as well be in the most beautiful sheets ever made, those teeny boobies and baby baguettes because they are killin’ me and the incognito model because I have a thing for faceless human art.

It’s FRIDAY! What are you plans for the weekend? I’m heading eastbound on a weekend road trip, finishing off the last episode of Serial that I’ve been neglecting and checking out an Illusionist show on Sunday night with Tim. Wishing you a happy, safe and extra warm weekend (163 days till summer!). xo

– My all time favourite shop sign
– New desktop wallpapers to inspire you to work it (no diggity)
– A dreamy little place to snooze for a night or 20

We Found Wonderland

wonderlandFotor01026203955My snowy grey day was in need of a little magic, so I rounded up 10 magical links:

  1. Cookie Monster stars as Furry Potter in Sesame Streets rendition of Harry Potter (Seeing that guy in a maroon and gold scarf is SO worth the five minute lesson on how to listen carefully).
  2. A hotel that looks straight out of a fairytale in the Chilean Patagonian Rainforest. I’ll take a one-way ticket to Chile, please!
  3. A couples costume that I actually really, really like.
  4. Refreshingly orignal fairytale themed engagement shoots!
  5. This cat cruisin’ around on a roomba dressed as Princess Jasmine (hahaha).
  6. Whimsical tights featuring a sneaky little dude climbing your leg.
  7. Make your own “magic shell” using coconut oil for homemade dipped ice-cream cones!
  8. Glow in the dark ghost nails for halloween on Friday.
  9. An article on magical thinking, and how it just might lurk in us all.
  10. Perhaps my most enchanting find of the day- wine in a can.

PS! There’s something truly magical about the release of a new Taylor Swift album isn’t there?! 1989 has a serious Lana del Rey-meets-Lorde vibe to it, dontcha think? Back to endlessly listening I go, go, go.

xo, Happy Monday!

Gone Grey

grayFotor0729104456Left:  I became wildly obsessed with this photo this week. It’s so scandalous and perfect.

Middle: Grey on grey makes for the comfiest of outfits and I think I could live happily in a sea of charcoals, slates and ashes for the next month or 6.

Right: I found a grey hair inhabiting my ‘do quite a while back. I ran around screaming “WTF get off my noggin’ I’m 20 years old” and I thankfully haven’t spotted one since. However, now that I’ve layed eyes on this seriously pretty grey mane I’m happy to announce I’m hoping to go grey by 25!
Just kidding. 🙂 Kind of.

On another note, after watching from the sidelines while National Pink Day and National Kiss Day passed me by, I decided I needed to invest some time in finding out when these unofficial holidays were happening so I could prepare accordingly (AKA stage a celebratory photo for Instagram… Just kidding. Kind of.) I took the time to scan through the month of August and find the holidays I think are worth celebrating (no offense to Petroleum Day and Toilet Paper day.. I’m sure someone will enjoy celebrating you). Here they are:

August 1, 2014 is National Girlfriends Day! (another holiday to celebrate myself? Oh no, please, I couldn’t… >:)
August 3, 2014 is National Watermelon Day! AND National Sister’s Day!
August 18, 2014 is National Cupcake Day! (I’m a Muffin girl myself, but I wouldn’t say no to a batch of these. Realistically, I’d backflip out a window for a batch of those.)
August 31, 2014 is Go Topless Day!

Happy Tuesday, I hope you’ll find SOMETHING worth celebrating today.
